KS3

These lessons offer many opportunities for students to explore and learn a wide range of dance styles, including modern/jazz, contemporary, musical theatre and street dance. Choreography is taught in clear stages and adapted to suit different ability levels, allowing each student to progress at an appropriate pace. Time is dedicated to developing strong technique, including posture, positioning, footwork and musical timing. Students are also given opportunities to create their own choreography using a variety of methods. They begin with the core elements of Action, Space and Dynamics, and then build on these by using props, stimuli such as images or poems, and music as creative inspiration. Overall, the lessons help students build confidence, develop teamwork skills, express creativity and gain valuable new dance skills.

KS4

At John Hanson, we offer the BTEC Tech Award in Dance, which is structured around three key components: Explore, Develop and Perform. Across the course, students expand their understanding of different dance styles, companies and choreographers, while also learning choreographic devices, practical techniques and effective evaluation skills for both their own work and that of others. In Year 11, students bring together everything they have learned to create and present a final performance piece. To support their technical development, students are encouraged to take part in our after-school dance clubs and, where possible, dance opportunities outside of school. The course also provides numerous chances to perform and showcase their work.
