At John Hanson we are delighted to announce that we are ‘Committed’ to work towards meeting the Quality in Careers Standard incorporating the Gatsby Benchmarks. After months of work on our careers provision our dedicated team have been successful in getting through this first stage of the Quality in Careers standard ( see certificate attached).

At JHCS we are proud of our successful careers education as we cover careers across the age ranges through our five off-timetable PSHE/Citizenship days.   During these days, students get to hear from people in the world of work, not just their teachers, as they explore all sorts of future career options.

This award recognizes excellent careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) across schools in the UK.  We are now well on our way to our aim of gaining the status by the end of the next academic year, summer 2019.

Our main aim through our careers program is to ensure our students are ready for the world of work.

Summer 2018 leavers –

In Years 7-9, students hear from ambassadors of Science and Technology, local banks, as well as learning about apprenticeships and post 16 options. We are always looking for volunteers from the community to come in and talk to students about their exciting careers so please do get in touch.

Year 10 explore the vast array of careers available to them and get to attend taster days at Andover College and Sparsholt.

The Careers Fair for Year 11 is a huge success, seeing over 50 local employers, post 16 providers and apprenticeship training providers attend, along with over 800 local 15/16 year olds from the neighbouring schools. In Year 11 they also get support with their CVs, personal statements and interview tips.

If you have an exciting career and think you could join us on one of our PSHE days to talk to the students then please click here to email Mrs Hall who will be in contact with you shortly.

As a local Apprenticeship Champion, Lynn can also help and support students who are considering an apprenticeship as a post 16 option.

  Extra guidance for parents:

In the current climate with anxiety about university fees, uncertainty about the status of particular qualifications and progression routes, there has never been a better time to ensure both students and parents know what is what.

The school are keen to ensure the careers provision we provide is first class! As such we review our CEIAG every year, and ensure that we evaluate each PSHE day, assembly and visit, to ensure we are providing the best possible guidance to our students.  We also liaise constantly with the post-16 providers to maintain accurate records of destinations.  Our current drive to achieve the Careers Standard Award also enables us to assess the impact of our provision.

This information will be reviewed in the Summer term 2019.
