The quality in careers standard

In 2019, John Hanson was the first school in Test Valley to be accredited the Quality in Careers Standard. The award recognises excellent careers education and guidance across schools in the UK.

NEWS

All of our local colleges are now beginning to offer a combination of virtual and in person Open Events.  All year 10 & 11s have access to a list that is constantly being updated and we recommend you look at the websites of individual colleges for more information.

John Hanson is launching its own John Hanson Alumni Association in the New Year and would like to welcome all former students and staff to join.  If you are interested or want more information of how you can help then please contact Careers Lead Anna Hall.

CAREERS PROVISION

INSPIRE

At JHCS, we are proud of our successful careers education across all year groups delivered through six off-timetable PSHE/Citizenship days, assemblies and tutor times. These excellent opportunities allow students to hear from people in the work of work, colleges as well as their teachers, as they explore all of their future careers options.

This is a constantly evolving plan as we add more opportunities for our students on a weekly basis. We aim to deliver for each key stage, a programme similar to the careers based activities listed below.

 John Hanson Careers Newsletter

We are excited to launch our first ever John Hanson Careers Newsletter. You can read the newsletter here

All of our careers activities are evaluated by students completing a pre and post event evaluation form. This allows us to measure and track the impact our careers programme is having for our students.

CARE

Careers Advice - Every Year 10 and 11 student has an individual 1:1 Careers Interview with Michelle Seaman, our new Independent Professional Careers Advisor. Each student will receive a Careers Action Plan, which they have discussed and agreed in the meeting. Michelle can also support students in the application process. She can also support students, and you as their parents, in completing application forms, writing CVs and completing personal statements.  Please contact her directly if you have any questions about post 16 options on michelle.seaman@jhanson.hants.sch.uk.

Guidance for Parents - From home, you can also support your child in their future choices by exploring websites with them on careers and the labour market.  Below is a link to resources that will help you.

SUCCEED

Academic success is important to us at John Hanson, but we put equal importance on students being the best versions of themselves when they leave us; fully prepared for life after school and the challenges they may face.

The table below shows that nearly all our 2018/2019 cohort went into further education or training; there is only a marginal difference between the destination of boys and girls at John Hanson.

Certain factors can greatly influence the appeal of a post 16 educational establishment, such as type of course offered.

This table above shows the vast majority of John Hanson students go to Andover College, with some also progressing to Peter Symonds College and Queen Mary’s College. Year 11 leavers also attended Basingstoke College of Technology, Sparsholt College, Park House School, Barton Peveril Sixth Form College, Bishop Wordsworth's Grammar School, City of Oxford College, Eastleigh College and Reading College.

As importantly, the table below shows that all of our SEND students from the same academic year went onto college placements.

The next table, below, shows that only a very small number of the last cohort changed their destination from what they intended when they left us.

This further highlights the quality of the careers guidance they receive with us.
