John Hanson School are proud of our Personal development curriculum that is delivered through a combination of smaller groups, extra-curricular opportunities, our pastoral support team, the tutor time programme, awareness days, and is complimented by the six off timetable PSHE days throughout the year.

The sessions are delivered sensitively by a combination of outside speakers and professionals, and our own staff, as we take our responsibility of preparing students for life very seriously, and as such are eager that these experiences will provide our young people with the learning opportunities they need to become well-rounded adults, in each of the following areas:

Personal and social education

Health education

Relationships and Sex education
Careers Education and Guidance

Citizenship
Economic wellbeing and financial capability

These areas are planned and developed by a small team of staff to ensure a consistent approach to PSHE & Citizenship, and where possible with the expertise of outside agencies.

The personal development curriculum has been written to ensure that we are making the best of local opportunities to support students in all aspects of their personal and social development.

For each year group visitors may include:

Year 7 –Hampshire Fire Service, the School Nurse, Bright Futures covering organisation skills, Amnesty International.
Year 8 –Hampshire Road Safety, Simon Says – a bereavement charity, Andover Mind, STEM ambassadors and local businesses, The Black Curriculum.
Year 9- Winchester university, Stacey Miller – a cannabis workshop, Hampshire Road safety, the School Nurse, Andover College, the Southern Universities network
Year 10 –Stacey Miller – a self-harm workshop, The Crisis Centre, The Teenage Cancer Trust, Alcoholics Anonymous, Stand Against Violence, Winchester university, Peter Symonds, QMC and BCOT, St Giles Trust
Year 11 – Local businesses and post 16 providers for the careers fair, as well as many more throughout the year such as Lloyds banking group for CV writing, Amazing apprenticeships, NCS.

We also explore PREVENT; a government program to spot the signs of radicalization, and teach students about issues such as female genital mutilation (FGM), breast ironing, sexual harassment and exploitation, knife crime, gangs, consent, upskirting and forced marriages. There is a heightened focus on these areas across the country, to ensure our young people are educated and kept safe.

The school is committed to supporting students’ well-being and their mental and emotional health is at the forefront of what we offer.  We run Parent Information Evenings over the course of the year to support parents with mental health, cyber safety, drug & alcohol awareness, racism, and supporting your children through the options, work experience and exam period.  Parents will get invites via ParentMail for these events.

We also offer regular well-being slots with a local Reiki practitioner, and ex-JHCS parent, Hayley Butt of the REAL therapy room.  She can be contacted directly on: Hayley.butt@sky.com .
